Firstly congratulations on taking the first steps to running your own business. It is a truely rewarding experience which can have its highs and its lows but overall it is the best decision you will make and you will wonder why you didnt start it earlier.
There is plenty of checklists and guides available online regarding starting a business. For this guide we are focusing more on the Technology side of things as there are quite a few areas you will need to setup to get your business operating.
A lot of checklists will say the first step is registering your business name with ASIC however we recommend one small step prior to doing this and that is to check if the business name already exists or if similar business names are currently operating in your area. The reason for this is maybe that domain name you want is already taken and so you have to use a different website address.
Domain Name: Ok so your probably thinking what is a domain name. A domain name is like your street address for your business. For CX IT Services our domain name is cxitservices.com.au. If someone wants to visit our company the domain name is what they would type in to get to our website address. This also will become part of your email address, so its important to consider the length of your domain name and you dont want to end up with somereallylongemail@somereallylongwebsiteurlthatpeopleneedtotimeineverytime.com – see how that would be annoying for your clients to type that in everytime. So try to keep the domainname short and relevant.
Business Name: you should also view if the name you have in mind is taken – Head over to this address to lookup business names – https://abr.business.gov.au/
Here you can enter the name of companies to find out where they are trading.
Domain Ordering: Next question your probably asking yourself is where do i register my domain name. So there are plenty of domain registrars out there however we recommend finding someone like URban IT Services who can assist you with registering the domain, setting up a website, setting up emails, and all the other tech related items that a business may require. CX IT Services has a Domain Registrar Portal that you can use to register domain names.
To begin simply put in the domain name below. Most Australian businesses go for a .com.au domain but you can also get .com, .net, .net.au and many more. But if your only going to be Australian based we recommend just sticking to the .com.au
